Grover Beach residents Jim and Michelle Maples recently launched the first motorized beach wheelchair rental business in the area — California Coast Beach Power Chair.
Reservations are made online, and the chairs are dropped off at the arranged time and location. The business offers various South County delivery spots; they will deliver to other locations for an additional charge.
The business has partnered with Pierside Surf Company to have chairs on-site and offer rentals from that location as well. It also has a partnership with Pismo Coast Village RV Resort.
California Coast Beach Power Chair was created after Jim Maples was unable to find a vendor on the West Coast that rented or sold motorized beach wheelchairs for his wife Michelle Maples, who has multiple sclerosis and is unable to walk on the beach.
“Our goal is to make San Luis Obispo County beaches the most handicapped-friendly beaches in California,” Jim Maples said.
He added that the chairs aren’t just for wheelchair users and can help people with limited mobility or who aren’t confident on the sand.
